Chapter 28

Tad had to tackle Ethan to stop him from putting his palm against the ruby print.

“Let me go kid, I’m not going to allow my daughter to work up the courage to sacrifice herself. It’s me, now.”

Only Tad’s newly enhanced dexterity had allowed him to stop the elusive man. The man wriggled and tried to slip away. If Tad let up for even an instant, the man would kill himself. “No.” Tad grunted the word with much effort. Keeping Ethan restrained was like wrestling fifty snakes, trying to put each in a headlock. “There’s a better way.”

The fight left Ethan. His curiosity peaked. Tad relaxed his grip on the man, but not fully.

“My helmet, my clones. My clones always die first. Even if I press the plate and die, I’ll wake up as one of the clones. It will become my true body. But you three will be left alone. Will have to beat the dungeon alone.”

Ethan jerked, almost escaping Tad’s grip. “Strength.” Tad almost crushed the man with his augmented strength.

The man wheezed. “No good. This is an ethereal dungeon, and my magic doesn’t work well against the boss. It will be Liz alone versus two bosses. The chained snake prevents recruits. It has to be me, unless that wolf of yours intends to throw his life away.”

Fenrir licked his fur casually. “I do not. Though I doubt it would take me as I am.”

Tad’s blood froze at the man’s words. He spoke the truth. For Tad to sacrifice himself to the ruby handprint was to doom the rest of them. Tad might escape, but would the dungeon open back up again, even if they all died? Not with Fenrir still trapped inside. That would mean that Tad would lose both Raekast’s Fang, and his wolf companion.

“I promised her mother. Promised that I would die before I let harm come to her. Let me do this, Tad. Let me do this, dungeon leader.”

The spoken title broke something in Tad. His compassion. The words he had told himself thousands of times floated to the surface. He would make the hard choice.

“Tad, no. Don’t let my dad do this.” Liz’s eyes filled with tears, but she charged forward, gripping her father in a hug. “Please dad, don’t go.”

Tad released his iron grip on Ethan. “I’m sorry Liz, I have to. I’m the dungeon leader.”

Surprise sketched across Ethan’s face, followed by a moment of hesitation. The man hadn’t been all bravado, but having the person standing between you and your certain death, suddenly back down had left Ethan facing his choice all alone.

“Dad, no. Please, not like this. Let’s just think it through. There’s got to be another way.” Liz pulled from the hug, but her gauntlets dug deep into his shoulders, as if he would disappear if she wasn’t holding him.

“It’s the right choice, Liz. I’m the least valuable member in this dungeon. I can’t let one of you die if it dooms the rest of the party. The dungeon leader made the right choice.
